AND IT MIGHT AS WELL BE THAT

As soon as you tell someone your favorite sport is baseball, they’ll say “Why? It’s so long and boring.”

I’ll tell you why, it’s simple.

Baseball is a game that makes you feel like a kid.

There is something about baseball that has a childlike atmosphere to it like no other sport.

Maybe it’s because players like Elvis Andrus and Adrian Beltre play like they’re still little kids who genuinely enjoy the game. Maybe it’s because baseball has always reminded me of playing kickball in elementary school.

There is just something about it, and if you go to a game, just one game, you’ll know what I’m talking about.

“How can you not be romantic about baseball?” Super cheesy quote from Moneyball but it’s so true. I can go on and on about baseball and you’ll think I’m crazy (which you might already and I might be) but everyone has something they’re passionate about and for me that is baseball.

To celebrate Opening Day and baseball, I took these pictures in the field of the elementary school I went to.  The bat, glove, and baseball, all from little league, all child size.

Anna, my photographer for this post, was taking pictures while tossing the baseball for me, and while I only made contact with two pitches (neither came out good on camera) it’s hard not to laugh and feel like a little kid again while swinging a bat.

It’s difficult to explain the atmosphere that is baseball unless you’ve experienced it but I think A. Bartlett Giamatti, former commissioner of Major League baseball, explained it best,

“You count on it, rely on it to buffer the passage of time, to keep the memory of sunshine and high skies alive...Of course, there are those who learn after the first few times. They grow out of sports. And there are others who were born with the wisdom to know that nothing lasts…I am a simpler creature, tied to more primitive patterns and cycles. I need to think something lasts forever, and it might as well be that state of being that is a game; it might as well be that, in a green field, in the sun.”
